The bridge Johanniterbrücke on the Rhine in Basel

The decision to built a third road bridge downstreams of the middle bridge has been taken in 1877. The 12.60 m wide bridge Johanniterbrücke, a metallic bridge on 4 piers, has been built between 1880 and 1882. In 1924 tram tracks have been installed on the bridge.

The decision to replace the bridge Johanniterbrücke has been taken in 1964. A new concrete bridge on 2 piers has been built between 1965 and 1967. There were no tram tracks on the new Johanniterbrücke, but a trolleybus line. Unfortunately, since the early 2000's years, Basel's trolleybuses are progressively replaced with polluting buses, which is a shame when one thinks about that trolleybuses do emit zero pollution.
