The Rhine in Huningue

After leaving Basel and Switzerland, the River Rhine crosses the border triangle F-D-CH (France, Germany, Switzerland) or "corner of the 3 frontiers" (French : le coin des 3 frontières, German : das Dreiländereck). Huningue, France, lies on the left river edge, while Weil-am-Rhein, Germany lies on the right river edge.

The 3 countries footbridge over the Rhine (French : passerelle des 3 pays, German : Dreiländerbrücke) between Huningue, France and Weil-am-Rhein, Germany, some 150 m north of the border triangle F-D-CH has been installed on 12 November 2006, opened at the end of March 2007 and officially inaugurated on 30 June 2007. With a span of 230 m it is the longest footbridge in the world.

At the location of the present footbridge, there was a flying bridge from 1843 until 1870 and a pontoon bridge after the 1870 war until 1944. After WWII until 1979, a ferry boat did cross the river Rhine at that place.

North of the footbridge, there is a road bridge crossing the Rhine river between France and Germany, the Palmrain bridge which has been inaugurated on 29 September 1979.

At the location of the Palmrain bridge, there was a railway bridge from 1878 until 1937.
